Untold Stories Theatre is seeking a director from Calgary and the surrounding area with all backgrounds and experience levels to submit for Grease.

About the Role

The Director is the creative and problem-solving lead of the production. They guide the cast and Show Leaders (Music Director, Choreographer, Stage Manager) toward a unified artistic vision while maintaining the safe, inclusive, and positive environment Untold Stories Theatre is known for.

Reports to: Producer, Artistic Director(s)

Time Commitment & Availability

  • Rehearsals run three days per week, totalling approximately 10 hours per week

  • Rehearsals are expected to begin early August (schedule to be finalized)

  • Significant pre-rehearsal work is required, including concept development, design meetings, pre-blocking, and ongoing communication with the creative team

  • Directors must be available for all rehearsals, technical rehearsals, and performance-related days, including Load-In, Tech Week, and Strike

  • Consistent availability is essential to the success of the production

Core Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Artistic Director(s) to develop and communicate the artistic vision of the production

  • Ensure all departments understand and are aligned with the show’s concept

  • Lead design and planning meetings, including an Initial Design Meeting and a “Same Page” meeting with Show Leaders

  • Maintain awareness of all production elements (performance, design, and technical)

  • Attend bi-weekly production meetings and stay up to date on deadlines and progress across departments

  • Lead auditions and callbacks, prepare callback materials, and collaborate on casting decisions

  • Plan and pre-block the show early, schedule rehearsals, and be present at all rehearsals

  • Empower team leads to run their respective rehearsals while maintaining overall artistic cohesion

Load-In, Tech Week & Strike

  • Be present and actively involved throughout Load-In, Tech Week, and Strike

  • Participate in required venue walkthroughs and assist with necessary paperwork alongside the Producer and/or Stage Manager

  • Ensure design and technical elements are prepared in advance

  • Lead technical rehearsals and support the cast and team through adjustments

  • Check in with departments as needed and foster an atmosphere of respect, collaboration, and teamwork

Ideal Candidate

  • Has previously worked with Untold Stories Theatre in any capacity (required)

  • Understands and supports Untold Stories Theatre’s values and working culture

  • Is an organised, collaborative leader with strong communication skills

  • Can balance artistic vision with flexibility, problem-solving, and team support

  • As part of your submission, upload a short proposal outlining your initial ideas for Grease.

Your proposal may take any format, including:

  • A short written summary

  • A presentation or slide deck

  • A mood board

  • A video

  • Or any combination of the above

This proposal does not need to represent your final vision for the show. It is intended to give us insight into your creative instincts and early ideas.

If selected for an interview, please be prepared to elaborate on and discuss your proposal with the Artistic Director(s).

Select candidates will be asked to have an interview with the Artistic Directors once they have submitted. These interviews will be scheduled based on the availability of interviewees.

Untold Stories Theatre operates on a volunteer basis and can not offer any monetary compensation.

Select team members may be asked to complete a police background check should this production involve person(s) under the age of 18. The cost of this check will be discussed upon offer for those team members for whom it will be required.

Submission will remain open until March 8th, 2026.

Several roles are required to begin a small amount of preparation (including meetings) before rehearsals start as per Untold Stories Theatre’s practices. More information can be found at the bottom of this page in Other Meeting Details.

PRODUCTION DATES

All of these dates are subject to slightly change based on what spots we will be approved for at the Pumphouse Theatre. Use these as a guideline as they are our preferred dates.

Auditions          

May, 2026

  • Weeknights: 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.

  • Weekends: 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.

  • Callbacks: the following Sunday after the last weekend of auditions.

    • 1 p.m. - 6 p.m.

Only the Directors, Choreographer, Music Director, Producer and Stage Manager are required to attend auditions and callbacks. Assistant Stage Managers will be asked to help out as greeters alternating audition days.

Rehearsals          

August 9th - November 12th, 2026

  • Tuesdays & Thursdays: 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.

  • Sundays: 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.

A meet and greet may happen half an hour before the first rehearsal for important notes for the team from the Producer and Directors of the show.

We would like all production team members to attend the First Rehearsal/Read Through.

Production Meetings          

August 9th - November 12th, 2026

  • Every second Sunday before rehearsals: 12 p.m. - 1 p.m.

Production meetings are in person and are a requirement for all production team members. All conflicts for production meetings must be reflected on your application for the show.

Tech Days

November 15th - 19th, 2026

  • Sunday: 10 a.m. - 10 p.m.

  • Monday - Thursday: 6 p.m. - 11 p.m.

All production team members are required for all Tech Days/Evenings.

Shows

November 20th - December 5th, 2026

  • Weekdays & Saturdays: 7 p.m.

  • Saturdays & Sundays: 2 p.m.

Only the Stage Management Team and Operators are required for show dates.

OTHER MEETING DETAILS

  • Same Page Meeting: January/February, 2026

    This is a mandatory IN PERSON meeting for the rehearsal team to discuss a breakdown of the show and the rehearsal process and make sure we are all on the same page with our expectations. The date and time will be determined based on availability of all involved.

    This is a mandatory ONLINE meeting in which all departments will meet with the directors to discuss their plans for the design and execution of the show. A schedule will be designated and not all members will be required for both days/the full meetings.

  • Paper Tech: Date TBD

    This meeting is to finalize technical/SM cues. Sound cues will be determined as the rehearsal process goes on, and thus sound designers are not required for paper tech.
